Who are the 'friends'?

Harold (aka Johannes) loves working with people. And, because he also loves work, most of his Friends are people he's worked with.

Johannes Factotum's inter-disciplinary foundations mean that some of the Friends are, like Johannes, also polymaths. Others are specialists, but all of the Friends have a curiosity and openness to new ideas that makes them ideal members of the team: Johannes Factotum and Friends.

This page contains some short biogs for some of the Friends. More will be added shortly.

emile bennett: designer & musician

Emile is a creative and technically-accomplished interactive designer, with experience working for high-profile organisations such as the BBC.

He fits in well with the Johannes Factotum philosophy as he came to online work following a degree in music, with a specialism in computer-generated experimental pieces.

Johannes says: I met Emile when interviewing candidates to create the interface and Flash application for the Online Tour of the National Theatre. Emile (and his colleague Dan) stood out a mile, because they had come up with the – totally crazy – idea of making the interface out of a stop-frame animation of a real model of the theatre. We soon moved on from this deciding, among other things, that three and a half months was too short a timeframe to get that involved with bits of card and Sellotape. But their approach and inter-disciplinary knowledge had struck a chord; designers' intricate 1:25 model boxes are indeed some of the most beautiful items you will find in a theatre. I love working with Emile, because he's never short of ideas, or afraid to tell me when I'm talking rubbish.

MIKE MARRIAGE: FILMMAKER
Mike Marriage (Filmmaker)

Mike – a key member of the National Theatre's BAFTA-nominated filmmaking team – is a filmmaker with a wide range of technical and artistic skills.

Although mainly working as a director, he is also an accomplished lighting cameraman and Steadicam operator, having shot everything from music promos to dramas and cinema commercials.

Mike is also an accomplished editor, with a long and diverse resumé.

In keeping with the methods employed by Johannes Factotum and Friends, he is able to vary his work across a range of disciplines depending on the project requirements and budget.

Johannes says: Mike was an obvious choice to join my team to put together the Online Tour of the National Theatre. What low-budget-but-high-standards producer wouldn't hire someone who's showreel included top-notch Steadicam, editing, motion graphics work and aerial photography? Mike mixes an appreciation of the best in art with some delectably low-brow tastes; his continual championing of Roland Emmerich's The Day After Tomorrow is a case in point.

The main things which seem to me important on their own account, and not merely as means to other things, are knowledge, art, instinctive happiness, and relations of friendship or affection.

Bertrand Russell

You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.
